Posted by Danielle Toste on Tue, Mar 25, 2014 @ 09:03 AM

At York, getting to know our employees is the best way to understand who we are. This week, we would like for you to get to know Brandi Will, Director of Marketing for York Solutions and Executive Director for Think IT.

Can you tell us a little bit about your role?

BrandiWillMy current role is a dual role as the Director of Marketing for York Solutions and the Executive Director for Think IT Association.  For York Solutions, I am always looking for ways to ensure
we are constantly providing value to our clients, consultants, and members of Think IT.  Additionally, I am charged with budgeting, staffing, and execution of all our Think IT programs and helping to expand what we’ve currently built in the Twin Cities to the Chicago and St. Louis markets.  I have worked for York Solutions since 2003, and I began working for Think IT
in early 2011.  It has been extremely rewarding to watch the groups blossom from starting with just 2 groups to our current 8.

Where did you go to school at?

I attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA.  I received a Bachelor’s of Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing.  Go Hawks!

What drew you to York Solutions?

I was drawn to York Solutions right away by the friendly people, flexible work environment, and family-oriented culture.  No matter where you start here at York, if you work hard and continually show that you can add value to the organization, you will succeed.

What has been your biggest accomplishment since working here?

I would say my biggest accomplishmentto date has been organizing and structuring Think IT to what it is today, including building a wonderful team of people that accomplishes great results
for both York and Think IT.

Why do you like coming to work every day?

Working at York is like being a mechanic and working on a car while you’re driving down the highway at 70 mph, and for some crazy reason that excites me!  I also truly enjoy the people I work with and I’m passionate about seeing what we’ve built turn into something special.  Another reason is our unique culture. We’re a work hard, play hard type of organization
where everyone understands the importance of driving results, but we make the entire process fun!

Who has influenced you the most, either professionally or personally?

Many people have influenced me along the way, but most recently, Dr. Arnold Bacigalupo, our organizational development guru, has really helped me to navigate the path to leadership.
Personally, I would have to say my family. Every day they motivate me to be a better mother, a better wife, and a better person in general.

How do you spend your time outside of the office?

With my husband and two small children. We like to go for family walks, trips to the park, and will soon be getting into ballet and t-ball.

Meet York Solutions Employee: Bryan Binstock

Posted by Danielle Toste on Tue, Feb 18, 2014 @ 09:02 AM

Knowing the people of our company is important in understanding us and our culture. So this week, we would like for you to get to know Bryan Binstock, Principal Consultant at York

Can you tell us a little bit about your role?

I initially started as a Principal Consultant with a client of York.  My responsibilities included Bryan Binstockworking with the current consultants by creating a ‘York’ culture within the client culture, as well as to expand the York presence within the client.  At the end of 2014, my
role changed to be more focused on expanding the York presence through adding
incremental value to new departments.  I am also the on-site Think IT contact for ALL resources, including employees and consultants from other firms.  With the help of Jim Spinner and Jim Hanselman, we have expanded both the York and Think IT presence within the company, and will continue to do so in the coming months and years!

Where did you go to school at?

DeVry Institute in Kansas City, MO – graduating with a BS is Computer Information Systems (CIS)

What drew you to York Solutions?

I was initially introduced to York Solutions through Think IT.  I had just relocated back to the Twin Cities, after spending the last 17 years working for American Express in Phoenix, AZ.  I started my career as a developer and then moved into more of a capability architect
capacity.  When I started looking for my next career move, I knew I really didn’t want to continue doing what I had been doing before.  I wanted to be in more of a customer facing role, more in line with sales or account management.

When I came into the York/Think IT office, I met with a number of great people including Trevor Matthies and Andrew Knutson.  I told them what I had done in the past, but then I said ‘I want to do what you guys do…account management’.  From there, the conversations/interviews continued with senior management and resulted in us collectively defining my position of Principal Consultant. While going through this process, I was attracted to the energy and youthfulness at York, as well as the ‘non-corporate’, yet professional feel at the office!  I also liked the lack of bureaucracy and politics in making quick decisions, especially after coming from a very corporate environment.

What has been your biggest accomplishment since working here?

I would say expanding the York presence at our client through strengthening existing and establishing new relationships with key leaders across the organization.

Why do you like coming to work every day?

Every day is different!  Between the time I spend on site at the client and York, I thoroughly enjoy engaging with different people throughout the day!  The conversations with people regarding such a variety of topics changes every day!  The opportunity to truly help people
grow in their careers through York and Think IT is very empowering and rewarding.

Who has influenced you the most, either professionally or personally?

Professionally, I would say it has been most of the leaders I have worked with and for over the years!  Specifically, I would say my first manager at American Express, Fred Wadlow, was one of my biggest mentors, leading by example and challenging me to become a better leader.  Personally, I am inspired and influenced by my wife Bridget and 3 kids; Nathan, Melissa and
Matthew!  They have always been supportive, especially during times of transitions into new career choices over the years!

How do you spend your time outside of the office?

With my family!  Between travel basketball, club soccer and other activities, nights and weekends are kept very busy!  When I do have time, I enjoy golfing in the summer and playing hockey in the winter.  I also spend time helping at church, volunteering with numerous
charities, sitting on the BOD with 4p- Support Group, along with a number of things. I also love to travel, especially to warmer places in the winter now that I don’t live in Arizona anymore!

Get to Know a York Staff Member: Andrew Knutson

Posted by Briana Perrino on Tue, Oct 29, 2013 @ 09:10 AM

The most important part of a company’s culture is its people, so we decided to share some of York’s culture by interviewing staff members and sharing their stories on our blog. Meet Andrew Knutson, Director of Consulting Services and Think IT Chicago Chapter President.

Can you tell us a little about your role at York?

Andrew Knutson

Well, I pushed to be called the Chief Jedi Talent Master, but it got shot down quickly.  My true day job is working for both York and Think IT. For York, I am a Director of Consulting Services, and I recently took on the role of President of the Chicago Chapter for Think IT.

This new position has been one of the most exciting roles I have had the opportunity to play.  My goal is to expand the Think IT brand outside of the Twin Cities, with focus on the Chicago area.  I meet with companies and individuals to convey the Think IT message along with creating and establishing meaningful professional connections for the members within Think IT.

What part of your job excites you the most?

The ability to work with people and facilitate individuals’ career development excites me every day.  To hear someone mention that they’ve found, not a job or career, but that they are working on something that is their passion is amazing. The fact that we are able to help them with that achievement is so rewarding.  I am fortunate enough to do something that is my passion and to help someone else achieve that gets me out of bed every day.

What has been your greatest success since working at York?

I would have to say my biggest success has been helping to contribute to the success of others.  My passion is mentoring and helping people with their careers, and to see a few of our newer salespeople be successful means so much.  One, in particular, that I worked with very closely over her first year of sales has just been promoted to oversee new account managers. There is no greater success story to tell than one of how people have grown and advanced within our own internal community.

What keeps you coming back not just to your job, but to York in general?

It really is the people, and the community that has been built both internally to York and externally with Think IT.  Nothing is more exciting than being able to have fun at work, especially when it is your passion.

Congrats on being named President of the Think IT – Chicago chapter. What are your thoughts on Think IT and what plans/or hopes do you have for the new chapter?

It is a great organization that is building a community for the market it is in and then bridging that community into an overall network to exchange information from market to market.  A medium has been developed to allow the ability for knowledge sharing, mentorship and networking expansion without the worries of fees and outside vendors.

The plan for Chicago is to stay true to what we have developed with Think IT in the Twin Cities, but continue to focus on how we can add more value to our membership.  Our Chicago Think IT team is great and we will make sure to keep the membership growing and ensure that we are having fun at the same time!

What keeps you busy outside of the office?

I am a self-proclaimed nerd.  When not spending time with my family, I can often be found traveling off to a new adventure, messing around with some new piece of technology, playing some type of sport (golf has taken over my life!) or hanging out with friends.  I have a constant Minnesota/Illinois battle going on as well, since I am a Bears/Vikes fan and a Cubs/Twins fan.

Andrew (2)

What’s something we don’t know about you?

I am an absolute Star Wars and movie nut!  I have a huge collection of DVDs and Blu-rays, along with a number of limited edition Quentin Tarantino movie posters.  I could spend days on end inside my house just watching movies!

Get to Know a York Staff Member: Andrew Turner

Posted by James Sweeney on Thu, Apr 11, 2013 @ 11:04 AM

The most important part of a company’s culture is its people, so we decided to share some of York’s culture by interviewing staff members and sharing their stories on our blog. We caught up with Andrew Turner, Manager of Consulting Services, and asked him about traveling to Japan, York’s work environment, and more.

For those who don’t know, can you explain your role with York?

As a Manager of Consulting Services, it is my job to ensure that our clients’ needs are met by aligning the right talent within the right organization. This entails screening, meeting and developing relationships with candidates to truly place them within an organization they can flourish and in turn, and helping our clients be successful.

How long have you worked at York? York Solutions employee

I have worked at York for over 2 years. It feels like only a few days though because of how fluid not only our organization but industry is. Things are always changing, keeping you on your toes.

Where did you go to school (college)?

I went to college at Winona State University and graduated with a Degree in Business Administration, Human Resource Management and International Business. I finished my Human Resource Management and International business Degree at Akita University in Japan where I focused my studies on International Business Development and Market Entrance tactics within the Southeast Asia region.

You travelled to Japan? What was that like?

Ever since I can remember I have had a unique interest in Japanese culture. I studied the Japanese business, language and culture in college and my interest grew exponentially.  Japan was a different world, extremely fast paced and business minded, it may sound cliché, but studying abroad truly was an eye opening experience. It truly does put life into perspective. Whenever “life” happens I always remember there is a whole world out there. Besides that, all the sushi I could eat super cheap!  おいしい(delicious)!!

What interests you about the IT consulting industry?

The lack of complacency. As I previously stated, this industry is always moving and changing, it’s extremely tumultuous. I have always loved learning new things and the IT consulting industry is one of the best places to do this. Whether you’re learning new skills from a technical perspective or you are learning new and effective interviewing strategies, there is always something new to learn.

What makes York different from other places you have worked?

For one, York really focuses on relationship development. Instead of looking at candidates and clients from a transactional perspective, York focuses how we can help our consultant’s career objectives for the long term. The York workplace environment is also extremely unique. York is truly a “work hard, play hard” organization. Our team environment is arguably one of the best and we are fortunate to work with some of the top talent in the industry.  We really strive to make all of our employees feel like part of a family. Whether it’s flag football, pedal pub, trips, etc., York definitely makes sure to focus on the team.

How valuable has Think IT been for York Solutions?

The value of Think IT for York Solutions truly is immeasurable. We as an organization, have always strived to find ways to give back to our clients and our consultants to truly provide them with a “value add”.  Our roundtable meetings are attended and run by some of the most influential professionals here in the Twin Cities. These meetings provide not only networking opportunities but unique insight and perspectives into the IT industry.

What’s your greatest success since working at York?

My greatest success at York to date was when one of my consultants took me aside and thanked me for the resume and interview coaching I had provided for them. They told me that because of our conversations, they were able to find a job the following week. Although the position was not with our client, the services provided helped us develop a strong relationship. Six months down the line, when the contract ended, I was the first person the consultant called and we placed them within the week.

To me, this illustrates the importance of relationship development and looking past the traditional “transactional” view of recruiting.
